Meet Jael Torrez–beauty entrepreneur, activist, and body scrub aficionado.
Torrez’s signature sugar scrubs aren’t just the result of a DIY spa day inspired “a la Pinterest.” Her indie brand Blissfulicious is a passion project that came from very personal and poignant beginnings.
Last year, Jael Torrez tested positive for the BRCA1 gene — the same “cancer gene” that Angelina Jolie took preventative measures for in order to outwit cancer, leading to her widely talked about mastectomy. We all remember that heart-wrenching NY Times article, right? P.S. For those who haven’t, you’ll want some tissues.
After her disheartening health discovery, Torrez also followed suit and made the extremely difficult decision to undergo a preventative mastectomy in order to prolong her life (did we mention you’ll want some tissues?). According to statistics, those with the BRCA1 gene in their DNA have a 85% chance of getting breast cancer in their lifetime.
Though surgery drastically decreased chances of developing cancer, Torrez knew that lifestyle changes were still necessary, one being to avoid harmful chemicals found in most beauty products that can still trigger cancer growth. Taking a cue from both her doctor and all-natural beauty practices (green-beauty addicts, this one goes out to you), she used her strict health precautions to fuel her mission and created Blissfulicious, a line of all-natural body scrubs that were multi-use, and free of harmful chemicals.
The vision for Blissfulicious was simple: to create affordable, effective, and chemical free products that raised awareness about the cause. The results were incredible. Her final product is pretty much an all-in-one godsend–makeup remover, exfoliator, cleanser, and moisturizer. With coconut oil and vitamin E oil as some of the primary ingredients, trust us on this one–it’s like a moisturizer you’ve never used before. Lazy girls, do the happy dance.
“I set out to create something my daughter and I could use without the harm of chemicals, and safe enough for someone like her at age 10 or me at age 40,” said Torrez. “It took off like wildfire. Turns out I’m not the only one that wants safe all-natural alternatives to the expensive harmful products on the market today.”
Now, the Blissfulicious line boasts 10+ seriously heavenly-smelling scrubs (from a classic lavender scent for an at-home spa day, to even a cake scent that we totally foresee as a quirky birthday gift) and now also a men’s line. A portion of proceeds also goes to to FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered), a non-profit organization that provides resources and support for those with the BRCA1 gene.
“My wish is that every woman on this BRCA1 journey would have a support group or close friend that would encourage them,” said Torrez, explaining that FORCE is the only support group that specializes in awareness on the BRCA1 gene.
The message seems to be resonating well with customers, as the brand continues to grow (re: so many scrub options!) and raise money for this powerful cause.
“It is so important to be proactive and stay on top of this every step of the way. I am filled with gratitude for Angelina Jolie bringing this to light. But there is so much more that needs to be done still. My mission is to spark conversation amongst women nationwide about this disease. More than just creating awareness – but to take action with their health.”
