Best Makeup Bloggers (& Vloggers) To Shake Up Your Feed

Mathu Thurai Deepica Mutyala Stephanie Villa Jackie Aina Shalom Blac Miranda Mendelson

These are our fave beauty bloggers (& vloggers) who use their platforms for more than just makeup.

Consuming copious amounts of content by beauty bloggers (and their vlogs) is a national past time — it is, at least, for us here at Makeup Madeover.

But beyond the high follower counts and flawless faces, we’ve noticed that makeup influencers are starting to share much more than just the best contour palette. They’re using their platform to promote real issues and we are here for it.

From normalizing diversity to critiquing our love-hate-love relationship with all things beauty, we wanted to highlight some of our fave bloggers and vloggers. They’re definitely worth a watch, follow, and subscribe!

Now that every makeup company under the sun is trying to up their shade count, Nyma Tang is here to take them to task. On her vlog “The Darkest Shade,” she regularly tests the darkest available colors by various beauty brands to see

Although sometimes successful, she experiences disappointment in a variety of ways. It’s cathartic for anyone with darker complexions, especially when products touting “every” color fall very short.

“It can be really disheartening to people to not be included, to not be considered,” she says, via BET. “It would make you feel like there’s something wrong with you. There’s nothing wrong with you. The beauty industry has some work to do.”

Her vlogs are useful because she leaves the foundation on for long periods of time before reporting back, giving the viewer a sense of whether the coverage really does last. She also tests crease lines and transfer resistance.

Ingrid Nilsen

Ingrid Nilsen makes an active, breezy style look easy with her wistful, jaunty grid. But when it comes to cystic acne she keeps it real.

Earlier this year, she posted a photo of herself sporting everyone’s least favorite seasonal accessory — a huge pimple.

“Personally, I have grown to dislike the terms ‘good’ and ‘bad’ skin because they come with dangerous consequences,” she wrote in her Insta post. “If you have ‘good’ skin you feel the pressure to maintain this perceived level of perfection and any blemish, wrinkle or scar is felt as a personal failure.”

She’s no stranger to being candid online. From coming out to fighting for social justice as a U.N. ambassador, she’s dedicated her life to progressive change and normalizing differences, making this vlogger a super substantive addition to your Insta scroll.

Shalom Blac

This past June, Shalom Blac taped a vlog as part of a #FACINGMYFEARS series and it went viral. In it, she has her crush take off her wig and makeup — meaning a real first look at skin damage from an oil accident she survived as a child.

Shalom is certainly no stranger to virality. Her inspiring, charming, and informative videos have garnered huge views since at least 2015. But she’s recently made a tonal switch from that of corrective makeup or concealment tactics to that of building self-love and celebrating individuality.

“It is not something you gain overnight, confidence is something that you work on,” she says in her video.

Stephanie Villa

Also known as Soothing Sista, Stephanie Villa’s looks are sharper than knives — all clean lines, bold colors, and classic punk styles.

Her ongoing series “The Good, The Bad, and The Trendy” (GBT) is a great place to start to get a sense of her unique perspective. In it, she tries strange-but-true beauty trends to see if they’re really worth the hype.

Her blogging and vlogging are rooted in empowerment, individualism, and thriftiness — she’s a pro at finding treasures at her local second-hand stores. Her style inspiration will surely move you to do the same!

Deepica Mutyala

You can find fans of Deepica the whole world over, especially after her extremely useful tutorial about masking under-eye circles went viral in 2015.

This Indian-American YouTuber has over 200k subscribers who tune in to get her vlogs about  makeup for brown girls.

She’s also the founder of the collective Tinted, where women of color (“tinsperts”) tackle topics at the intersection of beauty and darker skin tones. It also features a reservoir of beauty recommendations that provide a curated catalogue of tinspert-approved products.

Catherine Martinez

This Latina beauty blogger is not only talented in her style skills but she does so in fairly underrepresented language in the beauty world — sign language.

Mostly active on Instagram, she was inspired to create sign language tutorials by a deaf classmate at NYU, where she recently earned a degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders.

“It just occurred to me that when you watch media in general, sometimes [there’s] not a lot of communicative resources depending on where the person is or what channels they may watch,” she told Elle in a recent feature.

Her charming and comforting presence is something anyone can appreciate, especially when she tackles topics like nighttime cleansing routines or false eyelash applications.

And she’s not stopping there. Some of her more recent videos also feature Spanish subtitles, widening her accessibility reach.

Bretman Rock Tompkins

His style is a little lower production value, but that’s the charm of it. He’s an absolutely fierce makeup guru who keeps it real and never forgets his roots.

From unboxing vids to emotional confessionals, this Hawaiian-based beauty blogger has something for everyone in his consistently energetic and informative reviews. His claim to fame is a vlog with a fairly common “how to contour” theme, which combined with his magnetic personality initially boosted his followers into the millions (watch it — we dare you not to laugh).

But blender beware: he isn’t afraid of the vulgar and the crude — and in fact, that’s what his fans look forward to.

“I think it’s a very welcoming generation and I think it’s a non-judgmental generation and I think that using the profanity and stuff just kind of comes along with that welcoming generation,” he told KITV.

Jackie Aina

Hilarious, bubbly, and tons of fun, Jackie is great if you’re the kinda person who’s into dancing while pregaming.

She’s super ingredient-knowledgeable and gives you an in-depth understanding of the products she recommends. And she’s not afraid of going outside of the box in terms of application (she’s full of “pro tips” that’ll make your friends jealous).

Her presentation can go on a few tangents — such as talking about her nails or making social commentary — but she always brings it back to the theme of her videos quickly. You’ll love the journey she takes you on.

Mathu Thurai

This Sri Lankan-Canadian beauty blogger is all about dramatic lewks while still being approachable as hell. She features her family in a ton of her vids, from mercilessly pranking her sister to getting her dad to apply her makeup (a must watch).

But it’s not all fun and funny games — she provides great tips and tricks to getting trendy looks with popular products (esp on her Insta), as well as traditional looks based on her culture.

Named as one of Elle’s beauty bloggers to watch in 2018, you better hit follow before she blows up so you can say that you knew her before she gets famous (although with 65k+ Insta followers, some would say she’s already doing just that).

Miranda Mendelson

An up-and-coming blogger we’re excited about, this latina beauty blogger specializes in shame-free beauty.

She first caught our eye with her tutorial about face shaming that was as useful as it was completely absent of any judgement whatsoever. It’s a theme we love to encourage here at Makeup Madeover.

Named “Most Buzzworthy” by Allure, her “Slashed Beauty” blog is all about practical magic — AKA beauty on a budget. It’s a great place to learn about fringe products (WTF is Ibotta?) and whether they’re really worth the price tag.
